THE FAMILY YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF
PRESERVATION OF FERTILITY
Fertility preservation is becoming increasingly common for individuals who want to take control of their reproductive future. This involves a series of techniques aimed at safeguarding the ability to conceive later in life. The primary method is cryopreservation, which protects sperm, eggs, embryos, or ovarian tissue from the effects of aging or, in cases of illness, from the toxicity of certain medical treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy (gonadotoxicity), which can impair reproductive capacity.
STUDY OF YOUR OVARIAN RESERVE
At fivclinic+, each patient is unique, and every treatment is personalized. If you are considering fertility preservation, our first goal will be to assess your current ovarian reserve. Schedule a consultation with no obligation, and we will be happy to guide you through the process.
BENEFITS OF FERTILITY PRESERVATION
In recent decades, the trend in Western societies has been to delay the age of first pregnancy. Women now have the freedom to choose when to become mothers, often postponing this decision for social, professional, or personal reasons.
However, the biological clock continues to tick: both the quantity and quality of eggs decline with age, particularly after age 37. Fertility preservation offers a solution by allowing women to freeze eggs at a younger age, ideally before age 35, and use them later if they encounter difficulties conceiving.
It is crucial for young women to be informed about the factors that affect their fertility and how they can reduce risks in the future if they choose to delay motherhood.
IN WHICH CASES IS CRYOPRESERVATION INDICATED?
Here are the main situations where egg cryopreservation is used:
DELAYING MOTHERHOOD
For women who are not planning to have children in the near future and wish to postpone pregnancy.
ONCOLOGY PATIENTS
Up to 10% of women diagnosed with cancer are under 40 years old. In recent years, survival rates for these patients have dramatically improved, with over 80% living more than five years post-diagnosis. This has increased the demand for fertility preservation, with egg freezing being the most common method.
CONDITIONS THAT MAY AFFECT FERTILITY
This option is available for women who have health conditions, such as endometriosis, autoimmune diseases (like lupus), low ovarian reserve, or benign ovarian cysts, which can affect their fertility.
EARLY MENOPAUSE
For women at risk of early menopause (before age 45), based on prior evaluations and family history, fertility preservation is recommended. These women often have a significantly reduced ovarian reserve, making their fertility window shorter than expected for their age. Freezing eggs before the age of 30 is advised to ensure egg quality.
STUDY AND DIAGNOSIS OF FERTILITY
At fivclínic, fertility studies are carried out in a personalized way in order to individualize the treatment and thus optimize the result. From the first visit, our objective is clear: to achieve pregnancy.
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO FREEZE EGGS?
Ovarian reserve assessment primarily involves two markers: the antral follicle count and Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels. How do we measure them? Through two simple tests:
With these two parameters, a woman can receive guidance on the state of her ovarian reserve. A general health assessment is also conducted to identify any potential contraindications to treatment.
If ovarian reserve markers are already compromised, the procedure may not be recommended. In general, it is advised to freeze eggs before age 35. It is important to understand that the results of the procedure can vary depending on a woman’s age and other individual factors.
THE FERTILITY PRESERVATION PROCESS
Once fertility preservation is chosen and deemed viable, hormonal stimulation is used to encourage the growth of multiple follicles. The treatment typically lasts about two weeks and allows for a completely normal daily routine. Once the eggs are retrieved, they are vitrified (frozen).
When the woman decides it is the right time to pursue pregnancy, the eggs will be thawed, and the process will continue as with a typical in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle, including fertilization, embryo assessment, and embryo transfer. Any remaining quality embryos can also be cryopreserved for future use.
